Marine reserves lower climate-driven ecosystem changes by restoring size- and habitat-based food chain relationships

Abstract

Survival rates of the sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii were approximately seven times lower on protected reefs within marine reserves compared to fished reefs.

  • Small sea urchins had survival rates 10.1 times lower, while large urchins had rates 6.1 times lower inside marine reserves due to the presence of large predatory lobsters.
  • When seeking shelter, overall mortality rates of sea urchins were 3.3 times higher inside marine reserves compared to fished areas.
  • Shelter availability was significantly more important for the survival of small and large sea urchins on reserved reefs, being 6.3 times and 3.1 times more critical, respectively.
  • Greater occurrences of overgrazing were observed in high-relief rocky habitats where shelter for sea urchins is abundant.
  • Ecosystem impacts from the range extension of sea urchins may vary spatially, emphasizing the importance of maintaining functional predator populations within marine reserves.
