Maternal circadian rhythm disruption during pregnancy may lead to increased anxiety and depressive-like behaviors in male offspring.

  • Male offspring of mothers exposed to circadian rhythm disruption during pre-pregnancy and pregnancy phases showed increased anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors.
  • These offspring also exhibited reduced body weight and morphological alterations in the hippocampal CA1 region.
  • Molecular analyses revealed decreased expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus of males from disrupted pregnancies.
  • The offspring of lactating mothers showed fewer behavioral changes compared to those from pre-pregnancy and pregnancy groups.
  • The timing of maternal circadian rhythm disruption appears to differentially influence neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring.
