Changes in Mothers' Depression and Anxiety Symptoms Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Canada

Abstract

At the COVID-19 impact survey timepoint, 35.21% of mothers reported clinically significant depression symptoms.

  • Maternal depression and anxiety symptoms were significantly higher during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to previous timepoints.
  • The mean depression score increased to 8.31, while the mean anxiety score rose to 11.90 during the pandemic.
  • Women experiencing income disruptions or challenges with home schooling reported larger increases in depression and anxiety symptoms.
  • White mothers exhibited greater increases in anxiety scores than non-white mothers.
  • Healthcare workers had smaller increases in depressive symptoms compared to non-healthcare workers.
