How Mothers' and Fathers' Depression Symptoms Relate to Early Child Behavior Problems Over Time

Abstract

Mothers' depressive symptoms at 6 months predicted behavior problems at 48 months for all syndrome scales, while fathers' did not.

  • Mothers' depressive symptoms showed significantly stronger associations with child behavior problems than fathers' symptoms.
  • Change in fathers' depressive symptoms over time was a larger predictor of child aggressive behavior compared to changes in mothers' symptoms.
  • No interaction effects between parents' symptoms on child behavior problems were observed.
  • Few differences in child behavior problems were found based on child gender.
