Different effects of MDMA and methylphenidate on understanding social behavior

Updated

Abstract

MDMA (75 mg) may enhance emotional empathy and affect emotion recognition.

  • MDMA increased emotional empathy in positive situations but may reduce the recognition of sad faces.
  • Cognitive empathy and social cognitive inferences were not affected by MDMA.
  • MDMA produced subjective feelings of closeness, trust, and drug liking, unlike methylphenidate.
  • Methylphenidate did not change emotional processing or empathy.
  • MDMA increased plasma levels of oxytocin and prolactin, while methylphenidate did not.
  • None of the drugs affected moral judgment.
