Meal timing sets daily rhythms in the brainstem area controlling fullness

Abstract

Rhythms in core clock gene expression were quantitatively demonstrated in the dorsal vagal complex (DVC).

  • The dorsal vagal complex is identified as a multi-component brainstem satiety center relevant to anti-obesity therapies.
  • Molecular and electrical rhythms in the DVC persist independently of the primary hypothalamic clock.
  • Meal timing tightly regulates the phase of both the molecular clock and the expression of neurotransmitter receptor genes in the DVC.
  • The findings indicate food-entrained circadian rhythms in the DVC.
