How Eating Habits Influence Genetic Risk for Obesity

Updated

Abstract

Genetic risk scores for body mass index (BMI) were calculated for 5,669 adults across two cohort studies.

  • Emotional eating and uncontrolled eating mediated the association between genetic risk scores and BMI in both sexes combined.
  • Cognitive restraint did not mediate the association except among women in one study.
  • Cognitive restraint modified the relationship between genetic risk scores and BMI in men and some women.
  • The strongest association between genetic risk scores and BMI was observed in individuals with the lowest cognitive restraint.
