Medications for daytime sleepiness in people with unexplained excessive sleepiness

Abstract

Modafinil improved self-reported sleepiness by 5.08 points more than placebo on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.

  • Three trials involving a total of 112 participants were included, with low risk of bias.
  • Modafinil significantly improved disease severity by 1.02 points on the Clinical Global Impression of Severity scale.
  • Participants receiving modafinil showed a greater likelihood of being 'much improved' or 'very much improved' compared to those receiving placebo.
  • Ability to remain awake improved by 4.74 minutes more with modafinil on the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test.
  • Participants taking modafinil experienced more side effects, but this difference was not statistically significant.
  • Clarithromycin did not show significant differences compared to placebo in various measures related to sleepiness.
