Meditation and psychedelics lead to similar mystical and psychological insights linked to wellbeing

Abstract

Participants reported 147 insights from psychedelic experiences and 66 from meditation.

  • Three main insight themes emerged: Mystical-type, Psychological, and Philosophical-existential.
  • Mystical-type insights were reported more frequently in meditation experiences than in psychedelic experiences.
  • Value insights were more common in reports of psychedelic experiences compared to meditation.
  • Reported insights showed high similarity across both psychedelic and meditation experiences.
  • Metacognitive and value insights were positively associated with perceived improvements in positive feelings.
  • Mystical-type insights were linked to increased meaning in life.
