How Following the Mediterranean Diet by Children and Parents Relates to Childhood Overweight and Obesity in Greece

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Greek sample was 26.0% according to International Obesity Task Force criteria.

  • Children with overweight or obesity had a significantly lower KIDMED score compared to those with normal weight (4.65 vs. 5.16).
  • Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet in children is associated with a lower likelihood of being overweight or obese.
  • This association holds true regardless of the dietary adherence of the parents.
  • Familial influences on dietary choices may play a crucial role in children's weight status.
