Melatonin and Sleep's Role in Preventing Delirium in Hospital Patients: A Randomized Trial

Abstract

Delirium occurred in 22.2% of subjects who received melatonin compared to 9.1% who received placebo.

  • No significant difference in delirium prevention was observed with nightly melatonin administration.
  • Melatonin did not affect objective sleep parameters, such as nighttime sleep duration or total sleep time.
  • Subjects who developed delirium experienced greater sleep fragmentation compared to those who did not.
  • Sleep bout length was shorter in delirious subjects, averaging 7.0 minutes versus 9.5 minutes in non-delirious subjects.
