How Mental and Physical Health Affect Returning to Work After Long COVID

Updated

Abstract

Among 128 participants, 65% returned to their usual work duties after COVID-19 infection, with a mean recovery time of 21 days.

  • Twenty percent resumed work under modified conditions after a mean of 43 days.
  • Ten percent were unable to return to work due to persistent symptoms.
  • Global mental and physical health status are stronger predictors of return-to-work status than most individual long COVID symptoms.
  • Emotional distress and back pain are exceptions, showing significant association with return-to-work outcomes.
  • Support is needed for patients experiencing mental health issues, physical health problems, emotional distress, long recovery times, and back pain.
