Comparing weight-loss surgery and diabetes drugs in dialysis patients with obesity and diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are effective treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

  • The comparative effects of MBS and GLP-1RAs on survival in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are not well understood.
  • Benefits related to waitlisting for kidney transplantation in ESKD following MBS or GLP-1RAs remain unclear.
  • Current evidence suggests both treatments may improve metabolic outcomes in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
