Changes in metabolic markers before and after starting GLP-1 receptor treatment in people with schizophrenia

Updated

Abstract

Treatment with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) reduces body weight, waist circumference, and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in patients with schizophrenia.

  • Randomised controlled trials have shown significant reductions in body weight among patients treated with GLP-1RAs.
  • There is a noted decrease in waist circumference in patients receiving GLP-1RA treatment.
  • Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels are also reduced with GLP-1RA therapy in this patient population.
  • The applicability of these findings to real-world clinical settings remains uncertain due to participant selection in trials.
