Metabolic markers linked to heart and metabolism risks in European night shift workers

Updated

Abstract

Night shift work is associated with a 1.89 mmHg increase in mean systolic blood pressure compared to day shift work.

  • Night shift workers exhibited a higher mean body mass index (BMI) of 1.14 kg/m² compared to day shift workers.
  • The odds of developing hypertension were 1.38 times higher in night shift workers than in their day shift counterparts.
  • Night shift work was linked to changes in blood metabolites, including lower levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and higher levels of certain amino acids.
  • These metabolic changes were consistently observed regardless of dietary adjustments.
  • Stronger associations were noted among women and for those with more consecutive night shifts and permanent night schedules.
