Which Metabolic Measures Show Normal Levels in Overweight and Obese People, and What Risks Are Linked?

Updated

Abstract

Among overweight or obese subjects, 11% were classified as metabolically normal.

  • In comparison, 37% of normal body weight subjects were metabolically normal (P<0.0001).
  • Overweight or obese individuals had significantly higher fasting insulin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and elevated blood pressure relative to normal body weight individuals.
  • Body mass index (BMI) was linked to unfavorable levels of high-density lipoprotein, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and blood pressure.
  • Fasting insulin contributed to the overall metabolic profile alongside BMI, affecting total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
  • Obese individuals, even if metabolically normal, may face heightened risks for cardiometabolic diseases.
