Combining metabolism-focused rehab with hormone-based obesity treatment for lasting weight loss

Updated

Abstract

Incretin-based anti-obesity therapies may lead to clinically meaningful weight loss while preserving lean mass.

  • Obesity is linked to significant cardiometabolic risks, which incretin-based therapies aim to address.
  • Weight loss from these therapies may include reductions in lean tissue, but this does not necessarily indicate poor muscle function.
  • Metabolic rehabilitation, involving exercise, nutrition, and behavioral support, can help maintain lean mass and improve metabolic health.
  • Combining incretin-based therapy with metabolic rehabilitation could enhance fat loss and reduce negative metabolic changes.
  • Metabolic rehabilitation also supports muscle quality, bone health, and overall physical capacity, which are not targeted by medication alone.
  • Current evidence gaps and future research needs in integrated obesity care are identified.
