Males with ADHD showed increased excretion of hippurate, a metabolite linked to gut microbial activity.

  • Sex-specific metabolic profiles were observed in individuals with ADHD, with notable distinctions between males and females.
  • Increased levels of hippurate in male ADHD patients were correlated with lower IQ scores.
  • Changes in fecal metabolites in ADHD individuals included higher levels of stearoyl-linoleoyl-glycerol and 3,7-dimethylurate, along with lower levels of several other metabolites.
  • Metabolic alterations were independent of factors such as ADHD medication, age, and BMI.
  • Genetic factors appeared to have a stronger influence on the observed gut metabolites compared to environmental factors.
