Mobile Health Approaches Linked to HIV Post-Exposure Prevention Knowledge and Access: Review of Research, Patents, and Apps

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-five mobile health apps related to HIV were identified, with only 3 (12%) specifically addressing postexposure prophylaxis (PEP).

  • The analysis included 22 studies, with 2 focusing on apps as strategies for improving the sexual health of men who have sex with men.
  • Only 1 patent related to HIV intervention was found, but it did not pertain to PEP.
  • Of the 25 apps identified, 15 (60%) were available for Android, while only 3 specifically addressed PEP.
  • Most apps provided general information about HIV prevention and treatment but had limited features such as text, images, and videos.
  • There was no connection found between scientific studies, registered patents, and the available PEP-focused apps.
