Gut bacteria-related compound TMAO is linked to immune cell activation but not blood clotting in untreated HIV

Updated

Abstract

In untreated HIV-infected individuals, TMAO levels were independently associated with monocyte activation as indicated by sCD14 (R = 0.381, P = 0.008).

  • TMAO was not linked to platelet aggregation response or overall hypo- or hyperreactivity in either untreated or treated HIV-infected individuals.
  • Lower levels of carnitine and betaine were observed in cART-treated individuals compared to untreated ones.
  • TMAO levels were similar between cART-treated and untreated HIV-infected individuals.
  • cART-treated individuals exhibited higher ratios of TMAO to carnitine and betaine compared to untreated individuals.
  • Microbial translocation and monocyte activation may influence TMAO levels in untreated HIV-infected individuals.
