Gut dysbiosis is associated with increased neuroinflammation and compromised blood-brain barrier function in Alzheimer's disease.

  • Alterations in gut microbiota may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease through various biological pathways.
  • Increased neuroinflammation and microglial activation were observed alongside reduced levels of beneficial short-chain fatty acids, particularly butyrate.
  • Bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides and microbial amyloids could enhance the aggregation of amyloid-β and tau proteins.
  • Probiotic supplementation and diets rich in fiber and polyphenols were found to help restore microbial balance and improve cognitive functions in animal models.
  • Modulating gut microbiota is suggested as a potential complementary strategy for delaying or managing Alzheimer's disease.
