Microbiota Transfer Therapy changes the gut environment and improves digestive and autism symptoms

Updated

Abstract

An approximately 80% reduction in gastrointestinal symptoms was observed in 18 children with autism spectrum disorder after Microbiota Transfer Therapy.

  • Microbiota Transfer Therapy included a 2-week antibiotic treatment followed by fecal microbiota transplant over 7-8 weeks.
  • Significant improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain persisted for 8 weeks post-treatment.
  • Behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder also showed significant improvement and remained enhanced 8 weeks after treatment.
  • Bacterial diversity and the abundance of specific beneficial bacteria increased following the treatment, with changes lasting after the intervention ended.
  • Partial engraftment of donor microbiota was confirmed through sequencing analyses.
