Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) exposure in zebrafish larvae led to reduced heart rate, decreased body length, and smaller eye area.

  • MC-LR penetrated zebrafish larvae, causing developmental toxicity.
  • Retinal layer thickness was significantly reduced following MC-LR exposure.
  • Altered expression of phototransduction and retinoic acid metabolism genes suggests disruption in retinal structure and visual function.
  • Behavioral changes included weakened spontaneous movements and impaired swimming ability, potentially linked to alterations in neurotransmitter levels.
  • MC-LR exposure also led to reduced visuomotor responses and disrupted circadian rhythms, associated with changes in specific circadian rhythm-related genes.
