The Minderoo-Monaco Report on Plastics and Human Health

Abstract

Over 8,300 megatons of plastic have been produced globally, with significant associated harms to human health and the environment.

  • Plastic production is responsible for an estimated 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, projected to increase to 4.5% by 2060 if current trends continue.
  • Health-related costs from plastic production exceeded $250 billion globally in 2015, with the USA alone accounting for over $920 billion in health costs due to specific plastic-associated chemicals.
  • Workers in plastic production and recycling face increased risks of various cancers and respiratory diseases, while communities near production sites experience higher rates of premature births and chronic illnesses.
  • Plastics are found throughout the ocean and can enter the food web, posing risks to human health through seafood consumption.
  • The harms of plastics disproportionately affect marginalized populations, highlighting issues of social and environmental justice.
