Plastic pollution and possible ways to fix it

Updated

Abstract

The total mass of virgin plastics ever produced is estimated at 8.3 billion tonnes.

  • Since 2004, global plastic production has matched the total produced in the previous fifty years.
  • Approximately 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste was generated from 1950 to 2015, with only 9% being recycled.
  • In 2015, packaging accounted for 36% of total plastic production, leading to significant landfill contributions.
  • Around 9 million tonnes of plastic entered the oceans in 2010 due to mismanaged waste, with only a fraction measured in marine environments.
  • Microplastics have been found in human lung tissue and drinking water, raising concerns about potential health effects.
  • The use of bioplastics is limited, representing only 0.5% of total global plastic production, and raises concerns about competition with food crops.
