Mindfulness and acupressure for improving sleep in breast cancer patients with insomnia during chemotherapy

Updated

Abstract

A total of 147 breast cancer patients were involved in a randomized controlled trial comparing mindfulness-based stress reduction, acupressure, and a combination of both for improving sleep quality.

  • All active treatments significantly improved sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
  • MBSR, acupressure, and combined interventions reduced fatigue and anxiety among participants.
  • Acupressure and the combined intervention were more effective than MBSR in enhancing several sleep parameters measured by wrist actigraphy.
  • No significant differences were found between the acupressure and combined intervention on any of the assessed outcomes.
