Differences in Mitochondrial Changes and Repair in Two Mouse Models of Friedreich's Ataxia

Updated

Abstract

Increased mitochondrial biogenesis is observed in FXN-cKO mice, which develop heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

  • Friedreich's ataxia (FA) cardiomyopathy can manifest as either HFrEF or HFpEF-like disease.
  • FXN-cKO mice, which exhibit the HFrEF phenotype, demonstrated elevated mitochondrial biogenesis and fragmentation.
  • Impaired mitochondrial quality control was noted in FXN-cKO hearts, indicated by alterations in mitochondrial dynamics.
  • In contrast, FXNKD mice with an HFpEF-like phenotype maintained a largely preserved mitochondrial structure and turnover.
  • Distinct mitochondrial adaptations may influence the development of different cardiac outcomes in FA.
