Mitochondrion

Too much iron in energy centers is linked to waste recycling problems in heart cells of Friedreich's ataxia

Updated

Abstract

FRDA-related cardiac hypertrophy is associated with mitochondrial iron overload in heart-specific frataxin deficient mice.

  • Mitochondrial iron overload occurs alongside cardiac hypertrophy in the absence of increased oxidative stress.
  • Iron aggregates are found within cardiac mitochondria, leading to severe structural alterations.
  • Mitochondrial respiration is significantly impaired in FRDA hearts.
  • Dysfunctional mitochondria accumulate alongside increased mitochondrial biogenesis, indicating disrupted clearance processes.
  • The mTOR-TFEB axis appears to dysregulate the lysosomal system, affecting mitochondrial turnover.
