Fat burning and related protein activity in human muscle during aerobic exercise

Updated

Abstract

Mitochondrial FAT/CD36 protein increased by 63% during 120 minutes of moderate exercise.

  • Whole body fat oxidation rates progressively increased during exercise.
  • The inhibition of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPTI) by malonyl-CoA decreased as exercise continued.
  • Compared to rest, 120 minutes of cycling significantly reduced the inhibition of malonyl-CoA on CPTI by up to 34%.
  • Palmitate oxidation rates in isolated mitochondria also increased during exercise and were positively correlated with whole body fat oxidation.
  • The addition of a specific inhibitor of FAT/CD36 reduced mitochondrial palmitate oxidation to approximately 20%, suggesting its functional significance.
