Abstract

PEP-1-Catalase treatment significantly ameliorated atherogenesis and improved plaque stability in ApoE⁻/⁻ mice.

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation are key features of aging blood vessels.
  • PEP-1-Catalase reduced oxidative stress and restored mitochondrial function in both mice and human endothelial cells.
  • The treatment enhanced the removal of damaged mitochondria through a process called mitophagy.
  • Activation of the PINK1-Parkin pathway by PEP-1-Catalase was essential for its anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Inhibition of mitophagy prevented the suppression of the NLRP3 inflammasome, indicating its critical role in inflammation control.
