Using Mobile Tools to Monitor Mental Health in Young People: A Review of Reviews

Thirty reviews published between 2016 and 2022 were included in the analysis of mobile tools for youth mental health.

  • Seventy percent of the included reviews were systematic reviews, while thirty percent were narrative reviews.
  • Key mental health conditions investigated included symptoms of depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, general ill-being, cognitive abilities, well-being, personality, and suicidal thoughts.
  • Seventy-one percent of systematic reviews summarized studies using mobile apps for tracking mental health, whereas ten percent focused on interventions.
  • Mobile tools primarily included smartphones, with some reviews also incorporating wearable devices.
  • Twenty-nine percent of systematic reviews focused on ecological momentary assessments, while thirty-three percent focused on trace data.
