Need for Clear Rules to Evaluate Mobile Health Apps in Peru Based on App Store Search and Content Review

Updated

Abstract

A total of 66 mHealth apps were identified in Peru, with 47% belonging to government agencies.

  • None of the identified apps provided evidence of their usability or effectiveness.
  • Approximately half of the 10 most commonly used mHealth apps collected user information that could be compromised.
  • 60% of the most used apps did not disclose the sources of the information they provided.
  • Existing regulations, such as the Law on the Protection of Personal Data, do not comprehensively address security, privacy, and quality of information for these apps.
  • There is a need for a regulatory framework to evaluate and ensure the quality and safety of mHealth apps in Peru.
