Can a Mobile Phone App Encourage People with High Depression Symptoms to Get Help from a Health Care Professional?

Updated

Abstract

Of 2538 participants using a mobile phone depression screening app, 38% of those advised to seek professional help reported doing so after one month.

  • 322 participants exhibited high depressive symptoms and had never been diagnosed with depression.
  • About 74% of participants completed the follow-up after one month.
  • A positive attitude toward depression as a real disease was linked to a higher follow-up response rate.
  • Further investigation is needed to understand how other app users utilize their screening results.
