Models for Detecting Physical and Mental Frailty in Older Adults with Diabetes: A Review and Analysis

Updated

Abstract

The overall pooled analysis of 32 diagnostic models yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.851 for predicting frailty in older adults with diabetes.

  • Existing models for predicting physical and cognitive frailty in older adults with diabetes show satisfactory discrimination.
  • The pooled sensitivity was 0.810 and specificity was 0.850 across the analyzed models.
  • Logistic regression models performed better than machine learning models, achieving a higher pooled AUC of 0.850.
  • Retrospective studies indicated superior performance with an AUC of 0.900 compared to 0.843 for cross-sectional studies.
  • Common predictors of frailty identified include depression, age, and regular exercise.
  • All included studies were assessed as having a high risk of bias, limiting their clinical utility.
