Cloning and sequence of a key receptor in green crabs that may influence female reproduction

Updated

Abstract

RXR mRNA levels were significantly increased in the hepatopancreas of vitellogenic crabs in a stage-dependent manner.

  • Two alternative splice variants of RXR cDNA were cloned from green crab ovarian RNA.
  • RXR mRNA levels in the ovary were significantly lower in vitellogenic stage III crabs compared to other stages.
  • Methyl farnesoate (MF) treatment resulted in significantly higher levels of vitellogenin and RXR mRNA in both the hepatopancreas and ovarian fragments.
  • Treatment with RXR-dsRNA significantly reduced mRNA levels for RXR and vitellogenin, as well as MF levels in hemolymph.
  • The interaction between MF and RXR may stimulate ovarian development in green crabs.
