Risk of death for people hospitalized after using hallucinogens compared to the general population

Updated

Abstract

Acute care involving hallucinogens was associated with a 2.6-fold increased all-cause mortality risk within 5 years compared to the general population.

  • Out of 11,415,713 people studied, 7,953 (0.07%) had acute care related to hallucinogen use.
  • The absolute risk of death within 5 years for those with hallucinogen-related acute care was 6.1%, compared to 0.6% for the general population.
  • Similar mortality risk increases were observed for individuals without comorbid mental or substance use disorders, with a hazard ratio of 3.25.
  • Elevated risks of death from specific causes included unintentional drug poisoning (HR 2.03), suicide (HR 5.23), respiratory disease (HR 2.46), and cancer (HR 2.88).
