MRI measurement of hidden nerve cell damage in multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, long COVID, and normal aging

Abstract

A significant decrease in the macromolecular fraction (MPF) was observed in global white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and mixed WM-GM among patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and long COVID.

  • Patients with multiple sclerosis exhibited the greatest reduction in MPF compared to other groups.
  • Older adults (75-85 years) showed increased white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume and decreased MPF in global WM, WM-GM, and GM.
  • Young controls (18-24 years) had a significant MPF decrease compared to middle-aged participants (35-44 years).
  • Among long COVID patients, those with depression and insomnia had the most pronounced reduction in global MPF.
  • Significant correlations were detected between MPF and disability measures in multiple sclerosis and disease stage in Parkinson's disease.
