Abstract

Essence

Mild intermittent fasting promoted skeletal muscle growth markers and reduced visceral fat in mice through the mTOR- axis, while severe fasting showed harmful metabolic and muscle effects.

Evidence

This mouse preclinical study compared normal diet, short-term mild or severe fasting, pharmacologic autophagy modulation, and multi-cycle intermittent mild or severe fasting on muscle, fat, and metabolic endpoints.

Caveat

The findings come from mouse models and fasting-regimen comparisons, so they do not establish an optimized fasting strategy for humans.
