Combining different approaches to help prevent memory loss and dementia

Updated

Abstract

A total of 18,452 participants were included across nine randomized controlled trials assessing multi-domain interventions for cognitive decline and dementia.

  • No evidence was found that multi-domain interventions prevent incident dementia based on two trials.
  • A small improvement in cognitive function was observed using a neuropsychological test battery among participants receiving multi-domain interventions.
  • The effect on cognitive function was strongest in trials that included cognitive training, suggesting a potential learning effect.
  • There was no evidence of an effect on mortality in participants receiving multi-domain interventions.
  • High-certainty evidence indicated an interaction between multi-domain interventions and ApoE4 status affecting cognitive function.
