Effects of a multi-strain probiotic on adults with depression and anxiety symptoms over 12 weeks

Abstract

Significant reductions in depression and anxiety scores were observed after 12 weeks of probiotic supplementation in 30 adults.

  • The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores decreased from 22.47 to 8.83.
  • Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale scores dropped from 32.27 to 13.09.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale scores reduced from 15.33 to 6.87.
  • Clinical Global Impression scores fell from 4.53 to 3.00.
  • The intervention was well-tolerated, with minor gastrointestinal side effects reported in 10% of participants.
  • Females, those with tertiary education, and married individuals experienced greater improvements.
