Abstract

In 17 trials involving 137,791 women, multiple-micronutrient (MMN) supplementation during pregnancy significantly reduced low birthweight and stillbirth rates.

  • MMN supplementation is associated with a significant decrease in low birthweight infants (risk ratio 0.88) and small-for-gestational age infants (risk ratio 0.90).
  • A reduced rate of stillbirth is linked to MMN supplementation, with a risk ratio of 0.91.
  • No significant differences were observed for outcomes such as preterm births, maternal anaemia, miscarriage, maternal mortality, perinatal mortality, neonatal mortality, or caesarean delivery rates.
  • Subgroup analysis indicated significant effects of maternal body mass index and timing of supplementation on preterm birth and small-for-gestational age outcomes.
  • The overall quality of evidence for primary outcomes was assessed as high, with some outcomes graded as moderate quality due to potential publication bias.
