Abstract

Involving 141,849 women, oral multiple-micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy may reduce low birthweight and small-for-gestational-age infants.

  • MMN supplementation is probably associated with a reduction in preterm births.
  • There is moderate-quality evidence linking MMN supplementation to fewer babies being classified as small-for-gestational-age.
  • High-quality evidence indicates that MMN supplementation reduces the incidence of low birthweight infants.
  • No significant differences were observed in perinatal or neonatal mortality outcomes between groups.
  • The effect of MMN supplementation on maternal outcomes showed little or no difference compared to standard care.
