mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccine with eight flu proteins triggered broad antibody protection against influenza A in pigs

Updated

Abstract

The 8-HA multivalent mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccine induced neutralizing antibodies against all eight antigens and protected vaccinated pigs from lung lesions.

  • A computational approach selected eight hemagglutinin genes representing 95% of observed influenza A viruses in swine from 2022 to 2025.
  • Twenty-one days after vaccination, pigs challenged with a relevant influenza strain exhibited similar lesion scores to non-challenged animals.
  • Monovalent vaccination significantly reduced the detection of influenza A virus in nasal secretions and lungs.
  • Heterologous monovalent vaccination did not provide cross-protection but did not cause enhanced respiratory disease.
  • Both monovalent and multivalent mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccines elicited neutralizing antibody responses in pigs.
