Work schedules and sleep quality of nurses in Hungary's health care system

Abstract

51.89% of nurses work in a flexible shift system.

  • A total of 8697 nurses' schedules were analyzed from data provided by head nurses.
  • 1944 nurses are employed in a regular shift system, primarily consisting of alternating 12-hour day and night shifts.
  • The most common reasons for lacking a shift system are the needs of nurses and nurse shortages.
  • Nurses on irregular shifts reported worse sleep quality compared to those on flexible and regular shifts (p = 0.044).
  • Establishing a less burdensome shift system may improve the overall well-being of nurses.
