How Newborn Surgery and Mother’s Postpartum Depression Are Linked to Baby’s Health

Updated

Abstract

Among 436 patients, 19.3% of mothers of surgical patients screened positive for postpartum depression compared to 12.5% of non-surgical patients.

  • Mothers of surgical patients in the NICU did not show a significantly increased likelihood of screening positive for postpartum depression compared to mothers of non-surgical patients.
  • The incidence of positive postpartum depression screenings was 19.3% for mothers of surgical patients and 12.5% for mothers of non-surgical patients.
  • Mothers of surgical patients whose children were not independent on oral feeding at discharge had a higher rate of positive depression screenings (50% vs. 11%).
  • The surgical cohort experienced longer lengths of NICU stay and more days on a ventilator, but maternal depression scores did not predict these factors.
