Abstract

Over 3,000 genes were found to be differentially expressed with muscle age in a study of 1,675 human muscle biopsies.

  • A novel pre-frailty signature in elderly subjects overlaps significantly with the response of healthy muscle during atrophy.
  • The hypertrophy signature in elderly muscle, unlike in young muscle, opposes the age-regulated transcriptome.
  • Distinct genomic responses to exercise were observed in non-responders for hypertrophy and cardio-respiratory capacity.
  • Cell-specific processes in endothelial cells and fibroblasts were identified, including interactions between insulin sensitivity, age, and cell aging.
  • An independently validated transcriptomic 'age clock' was created, which remained consistent regardless of muscle load status in individuals over 50 years old.
