Link between thinking skills and natural versus guided smell tests after COVID-19

Abstract

Neurocognitive variables are associated with olfactory identification performance in long-COVID-19 participants.

  • Significant correlations exist between cognitive assessments and both unprompted and prompted olfactory identification tests.
  • The Montreal Cognitive Assessment and digit-span backward scores significantly predict performance in olfactory identification tasks.
  • Unprompted identification performance is further explained by factors related to logical memory, verbal fluency, and forward digit-span tasks.
  • These associations hold true even after accounting for demographic variables and olfactory threshold scores.
