Using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor activators to reduce brain inflammation and their possible treatment role in schizophrenia

Updated

Abstract

Forty studies were included, with 38 focusing on preclinical models of psychiatric diseases.

  • Neuroinflammation is linked to symptoms in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonists may have anti-inflammatory effects based on preclinical evidence.
  • Clinical studies on GLP-1 receptor agonists in schizophrenia and alcohol-use disorder showed no significant changes in inflammatory markers.
  • The inconclusive clinical findings may arise from differences in study design and measurement methods.
  • Future research should explore alternative GLP-1 receptor agonist regimens in non-diabetic schizophrenia patients to assess their effects on neuroinflammation.
