Possible links between nerve pain and Alzheimer's disease with early signs that diabetic nerve damage might offer protection

Genetic evidence suggests diabetic neuropathy may be linked to lower Alzheimer's disease risk through tissue-specific gene regulation pathways.

Evidence

A bidirectional two-sample study tested six neuropathic pain subtypes against Alzheimer's disease and added GTEx v10 and GEO GSE156184 transcriptomic annotation, finding diabetic neuropathy associated with reduced AD risk (=0.86, 95% CI: 0.77~0.95, P=0.0043).

Caveat

The inference is limited by population constraints and exploratory molecular annotation, with experimental validation still needed.
