Bergenin’s brain-protecting effects in Alzheimer’s disease tested through lab and animal studies

Updated

Abstract

Bergenin demonstrated significant cognitive improvement in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease at a dose of 80 mg/kg.

  • Bergenin exhibited dose-dependent inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in vitro.
  • Pretreatment with bergenin for 14 days significantly alleviated amnesia induced by scopolamine in rats.
  • Bergenin showed protective effects against NMDA induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y cell lines, remaining safe up to 50 μM.
  • In a streptozotocin-induced Alzheimer's model, bergenin improved cognitive deficits and reduced oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner.
  • Histopathological analysis indicated that bergenin treatment significantly lowered elevated amyloid-beta and p-tau levels in the brain.
